Ashta Vadivs - The Eight Animals postures of Kalaripayyat

Animal postures form the basis of Kalaripayyat. Nature of the animals vary in different styles. The animal postures form the stance, like the various martial arts follow different fighting stances, these animal postures are the fighting stances of Kalaripayyat. Although a little unvconventional than the usual stances we find in arts like Karate, Kung Fu, Boxing and Muay Thai, the Kalaripayyat stances really help forming a solid base and usually are practiced deep both physically and spiritually. These postures bring a great deal of strength and flexibility to the body. Once these stances are mastered then the journery on the path of Kalaripayyat (or any other physical or even mental endeavor ) becomes much more smooth. Animals postures usually followed by the Northern Kalaripayyat systems are :-

  • Gaja Vadiv ( The Elephant Posture)
  • Singha Vadiv ( The Lion Posture )
  • Marjara Vadiv ( The Cat Posture )
  • Vara Vadiv ( The Wild Boar Stance )
  • Mayur Vadiv ( The Peacock Stance)
  • Kurkura Vadiv ( The Rooster Stance )
  • Ashwa Vadiv ( The Horse Posture)
  • Sarpa Vadiv ( The Snake Posture )
Sri Murugan Gurukkal(In Black dress)  holding a Gaja Vadiv ( an elephant posture )
Most systems also have the Tiger posture which is different from the Lion and the other postures but is practiced in various fighting sequences and usually not practiced separately. These animal postures usually form part of all the fighting sequences of martial arts. These postures or stances are also practiced by the Southern practioners but not separately, i.e. in the fighting sequences these postures get practiced automatically.

Like the stances in other martial arts, these stances are a combination of stationary and dynamic movements. And once mastered they help the martial artist imbibe the qualities of that particular animal. For example Mastering the elephant postures makes one strong, calm and relaxed both mentally and physically. Mastering the Lion postures brings speed, power and fighting abilities in a person. Like this every posture has its benefits. A posture is said to be mastered when the student of Kalaripayyat can hold the posture for 3 hours. Then the student is said to be Siddh(perfect) in the posture.

Since these postures focus a lot on spinal movements they are healing and therapeutic in nature. Many people report healing of spinal injuries and other health defects by the practice of these postures. Ayurveda and other holistic disciplines of medicine realize that most diseases come directly or indirectly from the defects (probably due to incorrect seating postures and lifestyle habits) in the spine. But nevertheless doing these postures is not a replacement to medical assistance. But definitely if practiced with sincerity and devotion these postures can bring about a great deal of healing within the body.

These postures are also highly beneficial to people who are into various kinds of spiritual endeavors, as these postures open up all the chakras ( or energy centers ) in the human body. I personally have benefitted a lot spiritually by practice of the Ashta Vadivs. Besides increasing the energy levels in the body, these postures are purifying in nature and also bring about a groundedness in one's mind. Regular practice of these postures along with maintaining a compatible(fairly healthy) lifestyle can help detoxify the body and the mind naturally.

Postures are best learned under an established Kalaripayyat Guru. Those in New Delhi (India)  or nearing cities ( or those who are willing to come down to New  Delhi ) can learn these techniques from Sri Murugan Gurukkal or his disciples (like me) at various centers around the city. For those wanting to Learn Some Tai Chi & Chi Kung at Home

I came across two books - one on Tai Chi and one on Chi Kung by Robert Parry, by Penguin Classics.

The steps are defined quite well along with diagrams. Its a beginners guide to learning Tai Chi and Chi Kung. The Tai Chi taught by Robert Parry is of the Tai Chi Chuan Style. The long form of this form contains 108 Moves and the shoter version has 24 Steps. The book covers the shorter version and basically that is all what is usually needed. As the shorter version contains all the moves that are there in the long form.

The advantages of learning Tai Chi is that apart from the Strength, Flexibility and the De Stressing one gets very grounded. In terms of Martial Arts and fighting there are a lot of fighting secrets which are hidden in the Tai Chi form. When one practices these forms one's natural defence mechanism gets stronger and automatically the strategies that one learns in grappling and sparring with a partner get imbibed by the practioner. The most beautiful part is that the form itself reveals the techniques to you very naturally. All the techniques one needs to become a top fighter are actually hidden in the form. Yes I do recommend working out the fast twitch muscle fibers(sprints, Kicks, Tumblings) and the explosive moves once in a fortnight or probably 10 days. If you are a beginner then probably even once in 5 days. The soft relaxation based exercises can be done daily.

For those who cannot afford to go to full time classes(because of time and/or money) this book is an excellent resource. But it will take a lot of focus to learn these techniques from a book.

For the Chi Kung book, there are six exercises which Robert Parry teaches, which again are quite superb some of them are taken from the Ba Duan Jing(The Most Popular and standard form of Chi Kung)

I don't quite agree with Robert Parry on the food aspect though, I would never recommend Non- Vegetarianism for practitioners of Meditative practices, and even martial arts and actually wouldn't recommend Non - Vegetarian Food for anyone. But otherwise the book is an excellent resource for beginners. The grounding which non-vegetarian food brings can be gotten from all vegetables which grow underground, like Potatoes, Carrot, Beetroot, Radish etc, without all the laziness and the negativity. Regarding the Protein, the protein which Non Veg food has takes a long time for the body to digest(72 hrs) if it ever gets digested. Most of it is just thrown out. In the time a non vegetarian meal gets digested a vegetarian meal would have gotten digested 15 times, condering we have 5 meals in a day including Brunch and Snacks during tea time.

There is a cool video of Ba Duan Jing on the You Tube, you can follow the link. The movements and repetitions for each exercises can be increased to 49, or postures can be held for 49 Breaths. In the video its been shown with single repetitions.

Bodhidharma & the Yi Ji Jing

There are many variations of the story of Bodhidharma travel to China, one of them is this.
It is said that when Bodhidharma went to China from India to teach meditation and spirituality, he went to the then Shaolin Temple which was not really known for Kung Fu back then. This was long before Kung Fu was born. During his discourses and sessions he used to see that the monks were very fragile, lazy, would doze of during the meditations and were over all in a very bad shape. Bodhidharma saw that to have a good meditative mind was not possible without a good and healthy body, he sat to think about a way out to make these monks physically strong enough to meditate. Inspite all his pleadings the monks were unable to get over their own laziness and dullness. When words failed to have an effect, Bodhidharma sat down in deep meditation. He sat not for an hour or two, but he sat for a whole 9 years in deep meditation. A whole nine years in meditation. Just FYI.. 9 Years in Meditation = (1 hour of meditation X 24 X 365.5 days X 9) minus Toilet breaks minus Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Breaks minus Chatting with friends on the Phone minus going for evening walks minus everything one could imagine.

After 9 years of meditation what he came out with was 12 Exercises, which are called the Yi Ji Jing and 49 Postures called the I Chin Ching. Such was the power in these exercises that the monks who at one point could not even sit straight for meditation, and were the weakest of the weak, had joint pains and back pains, got transformed into the Shaolin warrior monks with bodies of steel, just by performing these exercises for about 100 days. It is said that all the variations of Chi Kung and Tai Chi spring from these Yi Ji Jing Exercises. These exercises are also said to be the Mother of the well known Shaolin Kung Fu.

It is said he also wrote a book called I Chin Ching which contains 49 postures. These postures are very similar to Advanced Yoga Postures only difference is that these are held for a long period of time( for 49 Breaths) and while breathing you keep our tongue rolled up. And you wear canvas shoes while doing the I Chin Ching Postures.

Coming back to Yi Ji Jing There are three variation in which the Yi Ji Jing exercises are performed.

One is a Soft Version
One is a Hard Martial Arts Version
And the Third is some where in between, which is a static version. I found two excellent videos for the Soft Yi Ji Jing and the Hard Yi Ji Jing am yet to find a video for the Static version of the Yi Ji Jing. May record one and post it up.
Perform these exercises with 49 Repetitions or you can hold the postures for 49 Breaths.

Soft Yi Ji Jing

Hard Yi Ji Jing

The best times for these exercises are early mornings. And in a little cool atmosphere. Shouldn't really be done in extremely hot conditions.

My personal experience with these exercises has been that these have highly relaxing and energizing both for the body and the mind. My advice to those who train mostly in these soft exercises is to reserve one day in a week or fortnight to work out the fast twitch muscle fibers, with Yi Ji Jing Hard style and explosive exercises, such as kickboxing.

The Secret Of Success

A young man asked Socrates the secret of Success. Socrates told the young

man to meet him near the river the next morning. They met.

Socrates asked the young man to walk with him towards the river.

When the water got up to their neck, Socrates took the young man by surprise
and ducked him into the water. The man struggled to get out but Socrates was
strong and kept him there until he started turning blue.

The young man struggled hard and finally managed to get out and the first
thing he did was to gasp and take deep breath. Socrates asked 'What you
wanted the most when you were there?' The man replied 'Air'.

Socrates said 'that's the secret to success. When you want success as
badly as you wanted air, you will get it. There is no other secret'

Five Characteristics of a Warrior

Responsible
Committed
Unbounded Focused Energy
Compassion
Humility

Responsible
A warrior always fights for a cause, if he/she fights for a selfish reason then he ceases to be a warrior can either be called a predator or a hunter. So therefore on the shoulder of a warrior rests a great responsibility. A warrior usually fights for a right cause, the one who fights for a wrong cause again ceases to be a warrior and is called fanatic.

Committed
A warrior always has to be committed, say In the middle of a fight one would never say "Oh!! my shoulders are paining and I shall rest a while".

Unbounded Focused Energy
A warrior need to be high on prana and it needs to be without bounds(fear, lethargy, entanglements, etc).

Compassionate
Compassion is what makes a warrior, a warrior without compassion is not a warrior and is again just a murderer/butcher/robber. Though compassion must never be mistaken for foolishness, if someone is putting your loved ones or you under a life threatening situation then you can't just let him go, he needs to be captured, bound or even annihilated.

Humility
True sign of strength is humility. A tree loaded with fruits bends. Just bowing down out of fear is called submitting and bowing down because one is strong, self respecting and up righteous is called humility.

What do we really want?

Health
Wealth
Enthusiasm
Self-Esteem
Love

Question: How to increase all these?
Answer: Easiest Way is to by Sharing All These. Well do remember in order to give something, you ought to have it first :).
How to have it. Just "KNOW" its there. There is difference between "Knowing" its there and thinking "its" there. Thinking indicates doubt, and knowing indicates confidence. How to "Know" that these are there is what spirituality is all about.

Give Health. By Being As Eco Friendly as possible, non-polluting, planting trees.
Give Wealth. Little bit here and there to somebody really in need and for some good cause.
Give Enthusiasm. By joining others in their enthusiasm, By saying yes to even their most craziest creative instincts.
Give Self Esteem. Bring out the good qualities in others. Pointing out their good qualities at the slightest chance one gets. Just reminding everyone around, how great they really are.
Give Love. Giving it all and taking nothing. Not the same as expressing it. Meditate Serve.

Whom To Give? Much more important than Giving is ... to Whom Are You Giving? If you end up making a donation to some terrorist organization .... you would end up not only being chased by the Interpol but also incur a truck load of bad karmas. So The Receiver is as important as the giver.

Best Recipient of Your Wealth is Nature

Who is the most generous in this World. Mother Earth is the Most Generous in This World
- Give her one seed and She gives you a 1000 fruits.
- Give her one grain of rice and she gives you back another 1000.
- All the above that we want is of value only till the planet is there. No Planet none of the above will exist.
- Simplest Way to Gain the Above is to Give it.
- Mother Nature Doesn't Dump You.
- She doesn't demand anything from You.
- She gives you a 1000 times whatever you give her.
- People Around You are also a part of nature. Love Them, Encourage Them, Build Their Self Esteem.

Remember when you donate money you take away Self Esteem. The reciever is giving away his/her self esteem.
If you give Self Esteem, then you are donating the "Ability to Generate Wealth".

Donating money(material stuff) is a short term solution, it is more of a selfish act than a selfless one. To make one's own self feel good. " AHA What a great person I am", pumping ones own Ego. Giving Self Esteem is a long term solution, its a true act of Selflessness.

101 Reasons to go Vegetarian

101 Reasons to go Vegetarian
No Copyright and anonymous author
This is the definitive list of reasons to become vegetarian — everything from cruelty and health to ecology and world hunger.

PEOPLE

1. Every year in the UK we feed our livestock enough food to feed 250,000,000 people while in the world 30,000,000 people die of starvation
2. 20 vegetarians can live off the land required by one meat eater
3. Every 3 seconds a child dies of starvation somewhere in the world
4. If Americans reduced their meat consumption by 10% it would free 12,000,000 tons of grain—enough to feed 60,000,000 people (the population of Great Britain)
5. If all Americans became vegetarian, it would free enough grain to feed 600,000,000 people (the population of India)
6. Intensification in animal farming has displaced 1,000,000's of people from their traditional lands—eg. indigenous people in south & central america, native americans in north america & crofters in Great Britain — this is continuing today
7. People displaced from their lands into cities succumb to dietary deficiency, diseases, parasites & opportunistic diseases
8. In third world countries 1 in 10 babies die before their first birthday
9. The UK imports £46,000,000 worth of grain from third world countries to feed our livestock
10. Due to overgrazing 850,000,000 people live on land threatened by desertification & over 230,000,000 already live on land so severely desertified that they are unable to sustain their existence & face imminent starvation
11. 1,000,000,000 people in the west gorging on meat & dairy leave 1,000,000,000 to waste away & 3,500,000,000 teeter on the brink

LAND

12. If they continue to clear American forests to raise cattle at the present rate, in 50 years there will be none left
13. 1 acre yields 165 lbs of beef or 20,000 lbs of potatoes
14. 8/10 of cultivated land in the UK is used to grow food for animals (14,732,000 hectares)
15. It takes 16lbs of high protein soya to produce 1 lb of beef
16. Since 1945 in the UK we have lost 95% of flower meadows, 50% of ancient woodlands, 40% of heathlands, 50% of wet lands & 224,000 km of hedgerows all due to animal farming
17. Pressure on land due to meat farming leads to soil erosion 6billion tons/year in the USA
18. If everyone went vegetarian upto 90% of land used for animal farming could be taken out of production & used to replant woodlands, leisure activities etc.
19. 25% of Central america's forests have been destroyed for cattle grazing since 1960
20. Between 1966-1983 38% of the Amazon rain forest was destroyed for cattle grazing
21. 90% of cattle ranches established on cleared forest land go bankrupt in less than 8 years as the land becomes barren due to nutrient loss & overgrazing
22. Overgrazing by cattle is destroying the land & increasing desertification, nearly 430 million acres in the USA alone has suffered a 25-50% reduction in yield since first grazed
23. An inch of topsoil takes 200-1000 years to develop—yet in the USA they have lost around 1/3 of their prime topsoil in 200 years (around 7 inches) due to animal farming
24. Land will be lost due to rises in sea level due to global warming due to animal farming

AIR

25. The destruction of the rainforest by cattle farmers is destroying the lungs of the planet & reducing the worlds capacity to replenish our oxygen supply
26. The 1,300,000,000 cattle in the world emit 60,000,000 tons of methane per year (methane is a greenhouse gas & leads to global warming)
27. Burning of forests, grasslands & agricultural waste associated with animal farming releases 50-100,000,000 tons of methane per year
28. Combining these figures, 25% of methane emissions are due to animal farming (not including the billions of sheep, pigs & poultry so the real figure is much higher)
29. Fertilizer used to grow crops to feed to animals releases nitrous oxide — thought to account for 6% of the greenhouse effect
30. Fertilizer, weedkiller & pesticides sprayed on crops enter the atmosphere creating a noxious carcinogenic cocktail
31. CFCs are released into the air from refrigeration units used to store decomposing flesh (meat), milk & butter—CFCs are destroy the ozone layer
32. Ammonia from animal urine also pollutes the atmosphere
33. CO2 is released by burning oil & petrol in lorries, ships, abattoirs, dairies, factories etc. associated with meat & dairy production
34. Emissions from large chemical plants which produce fertilizer, weedkiller & other agricultural chemicals are also poisoning our air

WATER

35. 25 gallons of water to produce 1lb of wheat & 2500 gallons to produce 1lb of meat
36. UK farm animals produce 200,000,000 tonnes of slurry (liquid excrement) every year, the majority of which ends up in our rivers
37. Bloody waste water from abattoirs ends up in our rivers
38. In the USA every second humans produce 12,000 lbs of effluent while farmed animals produce 250,000 lbs
39. Nitrates & pesticides used on crops grown to feed livestock end up in our rivers
40. Meat & dairy farming uses 70 litres of water per day per animal in the UK or 159,250,000,000 litres per year in total
41. The water used to produce 10 lbs of steak is equivalent to the average consumption of water for an entire household for an entire year
42. Depletion of groundwater reserves to grow crops for animals & to supply abattoirs will lead to greater water shortages
43. Aquafers (stores of underground water) in the San Joaquin valley in the USA are being drained at the rate of 500,000,000,000 gallons/year to produce meat
44. 18% of all agricultural land in the world is irrigated & as global warming increases (partly due to animal farming) it will cost $200,000,000 to keep these systems going
45. The water used to produce a 1000 lb beef steer is enough to float a Destroyer battleship
46. The liquid waste from the various parts of the meat & dairy industry flow into the rivers & from there into the seas polluting them & encouraging huge algal blooms to grow

EFFICIENCY

47. To produce 1calorie of energy from meat takes 60 calories of petrol, whereas growing grains & legumes to directly feed people produces 20 calories for each calorie of fuel used ( thats 1200 times more efficient)
48. Meat & dairy farming uses billions of gallons of oil to run tractors, fuel ships & lorries (to move animal feed & animals), pump billions of gallons of water to irrigate fields & run slaughterhouses, power refrigeration units to prevent the corpses from decomposing & to power sewage plants to clean up some of the pollution produced
49. Cattle convert only 6% of their energy intake (mainly grains & soya) into flesh, the remaining 94% is wasted as heat, movement (which is why they keep many animals in very close confinement), hair, bones, faeces etc
50. 1lb of beef takes 1 gallon of petrol to produce
51. A family of four eating beef for a year uses enough petrol to run a car for 6 months (obviously depending on how far you drive!)
52. If the full ecological cost of meat was passed onto the consumer—the price would be quadrupled (at least)
53. The EC spends o100,000,000's to subsidise animal production resulting in lakes of unwanted milk & mountains of unwanted meat & butter. This money could be better spent encouraging organic fruit, vegetable & grain production
54. In the USA in 1979 145,000,000 tons of crops were fed to cattle resulting in only 21million tons of animal bodies—the cost of the wasted crops was $20,000,000,000
55. Between 1950 & 1985 grain production in Europe & the USA increased massively but 2/3 was fed to animals
56. 70% of all grain is fed to animals
57. Eating vast quantities of animal flesh, eggs, milk & butter is a luxury that most of the planet can not afford

ANIMALS

58. Fishing with drift (and other modern) nets weakens & destroys ecosystems by indiscriminately killing billions of sea creatures & disrupting the sea bed
59. Fishermen's nets kill 10 times as many other animals as the fish they are hoping to catch
60. Fish caught in nets die an agonising slow death of suffocation
61. Each year 15,000,000,000 land animals are slaughtered for food & an unknown but much larger number of sea creatures (including 1000's of dolphins caught accidentally)
62. Chickens are crammed into battery cages with upto 3 other birds, they are unable to even spread their wings & many can not even stand up
63. Unwanted male chicks (because they can't lay eggs) are gassed or pulped while their sisters go to the battery sheds
64. Chicks are debeaked without anaesthetic to prevent them injuring each other in the unnaturally confined conditions they are kept in—this is equivalent to having your fingernails pulled out without anaesthetic
65. Modern farming methods using growth hormones & artificial lighting mean that many chickens out grow their bones, resulting in fractured & broken legs
66. Sows are kept tethered in stalls 1.3 x 1 metre on concrete or slatted floors—they can not even turn around
67. Poultry raised for meat are kept in windowless broiler sheds, with around 20-30,000 in each shed, they live in an area of 10-20 cm square—fighting due to overcrowding is common & like battery hens they commonly suffer from supperating bed sores
68. Broilersheds are artificially lit 23 hours a day to produce rapid growth
69. Animals travel between farms & to slaughter in overcrowded transporters with no food or water—resulting in stress, injuries & deaths—legal requirements are widely ignored
70. 95% of poultry suffer injuries before being killed & 30% suffer broken bones
71. Problems with stunning practices mean that many animals have their throats slit while still conscious (around 6% of cattle or 200,000 per year) & are then dipped in tanks of scalding water (to loosen feathers, bristles etc.) again while fully conscious
72. 4000 animals die spurting their blood out every minute in a British slaughterhouse
73. Calf leather comes from animals killed at just 2 weeks old
74. Cows were fed on the ground up remains of other cows & sheep—the result is thought to be BSE (mad cow disease) in the USA cattle are fed partly on recycled plastic pellets
75. Cows only give milk for 10 months after they have a calf—so they are routinely artificially inseminated (ie. mechanically raped) to keep them pregnant & milking—their calves are taken away (usually at 12 hours old) for meat or export to veal crates
76. Cows would naturally live upto 20 years but are slaughtered after 5-7 years when their milk production begins to fall
77. In the UK animals are killed by first being stunned with electricity or a captive bolt gun (ie. a bolt is fired into their heads) before having their throats slit & being plunged into boiling water—all this happens on a production line with the animals being hung upside down from a moving conveyor belt—this is factory farming
78. "Animals are those unfortunate slaves & victims of the most brutal part of mankind"—John Stewart Mill (philosopher)
79. Veal calves are confined in stalls in the dark, unable to move & are fed on pigs blood, chocolate & dried milk (we are drinking the rich fresh milk of their mothers)
80. Cows naturally produce 5 litres of milk per day for their calves—under the intensified systems of modern farming they produce 25-40 litres per day — resulting in swollen & inflamed udders—at this rate they are soon worn out
81. Large areas of land are under monoculture to grow crops to feed to animals—these areas are wildlife deserts supporting fewer & fewer species.

HEALTH

82. Vegetarians have a 20% lower rate of mortality from all causes (ie. they live longer & don't get sick as often)
83. Meat is full of traces of antibiotics, hormones, toxins produced by stress & pesticide residues that become concentrated from all the crops they have eaten
84. Fish contain heavy metals & other pollutants -many of which originated on farms
85. The world health organisation recommends a diet low in saturated fat, sugar, salt & with plenty of fibre—exactly what you get on a vegan/vegetarian diet
86. Farmed animals contain upto 50% saturated fat in their bodies
87. Vegetarians have 24% reduced risk of getting heart disease & Vegans a 57% reduction (heart disease is the biggest killer in the UK accounting for 50% of deaths)
88. Obesity is rare in vegetarians, obesity is related to many diseases
89. Vegans & vegetarians have lower blood pressure & cholesterol levels—high levels are associated with heart disease, strokes & kidney failure
90. Vegetarians have a 50% reduced risk of dying of diabetes
91. Vegetarians have a 40% reduced level of cancer than the general population thought to be because they have a higher intake of vitamins A,C & E
92. Vegetarians have a reduced risk of developing gall & kidney stones
93. 80% of food poisoning is due to infected meat (faeces, bacteria etc.) after all meat is decomposing flesh—most of the rest is due to salmonella in eggs
94. Osteoporosis due to calcium loss from bones is mainly due to the sulphur content in meat & casein protein in milk that cause calcium to be lost in the urine—the countries with the highest meat & dairy consumption are those with the highest levels of brittle bones
95. 50% of people do not have the enzyme to digest milk properly & milk allergy is related to asthma & eczema
96. Meat eaters have double the rate of Alzheimers disease as Vegans & Vegetarians—some people also think that Parkinsons disease is also linked to meat eating
97. Egg yolk is a dense concentration of saturated fat & the white is high in albumin protein associated with leaching calcium into your urine. Butter is 80% saturated fat, cream is 40% saturated fat & cheese is 25-40% saturated fat
98. Meat eaters are two and a half times more likely to get bowel cancer than Vegetarians
99. The cling film used to wrap meat in supermarkets & butchers contains chemicals linked to falling sperm counts in men
100. Chinese people (living mainly on a vegetarian diet) consume 20% more calories than Americans but Americans are 20% fatter
101. Of 2,100,000 deaths in the USA in 1987, 1,500,000 were related to diet (ie. meat & dairy)

AND I COULD GO ON !

If you've read this far, I hope that you are beginning to see that the Meat & Dairy industry is a major contributor to misery on this planet. It is destroying the health of people in rich countries, starving those in poor countries, it is torturing & killing billions of animals every year and in the meantime it is one of the major factors in the destruction of the environment—so what does the meat & dairy industry have to say in it's defence? Well their only real point is usually "Meat is tasty"—fair enough a lot of people enjoy the taste of meat—but there are plenty of delicious alternatives (just consider the huge range of vegetarian dishes in Indian cooking—one of the oldest & most sophisticated cuisines in the world) and if you really crave meat & dairy, nowadays there are plenty of healthy non animal alternatives—just look in the supermarket & health food shop. So I hope you will agree it's pretty pathetic to consider all the evidence & then say "well I know you're right about the environment & health & the animals — but I just love my meat

Martial Arts Vs Spirituality and Non Violence

Often we see a conflict between Martial Arts and Non-Violence/Spirituality. How can some art which teaches people how to fight, how to use weapons, sticks & where to strike a person to immobilize or maybe even kill, be a spiritual discipline.

Some of us do consider martial arts to be spiritual but still dont know why is martial arts a spiritual discipline. Well we can understand, Yogasanas, pranayaams, Zen Buddhism, Reiki and even Martial arts such as Tai Chi and Chi Kung to be spiritual and non-violent disciplines. But how can learning kickboxing, Muay Thai, Hard Core Elbow Strikes, Knee Strikes, Jabs, Knockout Hooks, Upper Cuts and so on be spiritual and non-violent.

Well to understand the above first we need to understand the following.
The humility of a weak person has no value, the non-violence of a weakling has to no value, the humility and peaceful nature of a strong person does have value. For example a mouse or rabbit goes by you, this event wouldn't have any value to you(well if you have a real strong phobia for rats or rabbits then its a different matter then) but just imagine if you are in a jungle and lion, tiger or a jaguar walks past you without harming you, you would remember it all your life. Once a tiger who had strayed from the wild did walk past an old uncle of mine, he rubbed himself like a cat does on him and walked past him, this happened many years back and he still goes about talking about it. It wouldn't have been much of an event if a cat had done the same.

So truly speaking the non-violence of a man who can devastate a man with one strike is true non-violence, such a non-violence comes from within the depth of the mind. Non-Violence usually is taken as non-expression of violent feelings in the mind. But it is not that, mind which is relaxed, peaceful and calm is a non-violent mind.

How is COMBATRIX different from the usual self defence workshop

* First of all Combatrix is not exactly a Self defence workshop(its a bit more), though Self Defence is a part of it. Combatrix is mainly a Self Developement Workshop which includes Training in Hand Combat skills & meditative practices in martial arts which makes us a force to reckon with in our day to day life. It also makes us a more dynamic and versatile personality.
* Combatrix is a blend of Soft Relaxation based Meditative Techniques and Hard Fight Based Combat Techniques taken from various martial arts.
* There may seem to be a conflict between Soft Relaxation Techniques and hard fight based techniques, but in reality they complement each other like two lovers.
* Combatrix presents the best of all martial arts blended together in a 10 day workshop which aims at making a person strong, flexible and confident not only in martial arts but also in his work.
* At the end of the workshop I do not promise that the participant would be the best fighter in the world, but I do promise a technique if practiced with dedication over a period of time can make the person excel in whatever he or she decides it to be. Be it fight or work or both, and much more.
* The combat techniques taught here are not to win fights but how to survive them. Well there are pretty good chances that in the process of surviving you may actually win.

COMBATRIX THE WORKSHOP

I have come out with Combatrix, which combines the best from all martial arts and sports training workout. Combatrix combines meditative practices existing in martial arts with Hard core fighting methods. The workshops suits all age groups and all body types as the training intensity is moderate and controlled but highly effective. Combatrix contains practically applicable fighting methods, particularly suited for individuals with little no or training in martial arts. All aspects of fighting such as grappling, stand up fighting, ground fighting are covered in the workshop. And very powerful meditative & destressing techniques are taught which make the participant not only tough physically but also mentally.

Combatrix encourages participants to develop their own fighting methods after learning the existing methods taught to them, as opposed to spoon feeding with techniques, as the human mind recognizes the techniques best suited for its body. Aim of this workshop is to make the participant not only strong and focussed but also responsible and sensitive to his or her surroundings & people.

The workshop aims at improving the following points in an individual

  • Strength

  • Flexibility

  • Agility

  • Power

  • Endurance

  • Fighting Skills

  • Mental Focus

  • Relaxation skills

Some Real Life Fight Tips # 1

  • Never raise your kick, below belt level in a life threatening fight especially when you are fighting more than one person. Once you have the confidence of kicking high & strong, only then use the high kick but that too preferably if the opponent is tending to back out of the fight, or if you have to give finishing touches to the already bashed up opponent.
  • Never lose your cool in a fight, always be relaxed & alert. Losing cool, makes one stiff, and in aggression one tends to open up his guards.
  • Raise the valor in you. There may be times in ones life that one may rather fight to his or her death than run away(this is usually when some body's loved one is in danger). During such situations there is only one thing that really helps... that is the "Kshatriya Bhaav".... the Valor in oneself. The Valor is linked to the praana shakti in a person which is in turn linked to the breath. If in a fight you feel that you are being dominated or are getting nervous, then breathe out forcefully a couple of times like in Kapaalbhati pranayaam practiced in Yoga.
  • But there are also times when one might just rather run away than risk anything.
  • Always be humble. Never really pick up a fight, even if a fight is brewing up, always look to end the fight non-violently, through talks, in a cool headed demeanor. Then even if with all your efforts if the fight seems imminent then either run away and forget about it, or fight to the end(or till the time you find an escape route). In terms of technicality:- never get into the Bully Stance during such situations, always be in the ignoring stance(I don't want to fight you stance). Your guards are all open in the bully stance and the opponent gets forewarned about any attack of yours.
  • Always keep your eyes on your opponent. As you advance in skill and if you are facing more than one opponent, the more the presence of your mind the more you'll be aware of all your opponents.
  • Never think of showing off when you get caught up in a brawl. You are most vulnerable when you are in the show off mode.

What happens when we get into a fight or a tight situation anywhere?

We are unable to think anything, our mind gets tensed and panicky, all muscles get tensed up and we are unable to even think let alone move.. Or for that matter when the boss decides to blow the steam on you, all the points in the book you read about relaxation and smiling at your boss when he screams at you goes for a toss. You can't be relaxed by reading books, you cant be relaxed by listening to people in seminars. Relaxation is a skill like any other skill which needs to be practiced. Relaxation is not only flexibility of the mind & body it is also the strength of both. And here in Combatrix you shall learn practices which when practiced regularly increase our ability to stay relaxed in the worst of all situations and when the mind is truly relaxed & alert it works out a solution which the strong body implements. That also means that the mind invents a technique according to the situation.

So to sum up the most important point in any fight situation or tight situation.
  • BE RELAXED and AT THE SAME TIME BE ALERT.
    • If one is only relaxed he will be bashed up left right and centre, If one is only alert he'll tense up and wouldn't be able to move a muscle. So the skill here is to be relaxed and alert.

COMBAT BEYOND THE TECHNIQUES

  • Anyone who has been learning any martial or has gone through any self defence workshop has been made to go through techniques
    • Techniques such as
      • What to do when someone points a knife at you
      • What to do when someone grabs you from the back
      • What to do when someone points a pistol at you.
      • What to do when someone pushes you.
      • ....many more what to do's

  • Sounds very nice and easy, but things don't work out always as we want it
    • What if there are 12 people grabbing you
    • What if the person decides to shoot you instead of just keeping the gun on your back.
    • What if there are 5 people deciding to get cozy with you all at once.
    • What if you have somebody with you who has not learnt the tecniques you learnt at the martial arts school and he or she becomes your weakness.

I dont mean to write off techniques, or I am not saying there is anything wrong with them, what I mean to say that there is something beyond the techniques which makes the technique work. And recognizing that is wisdom .... more common sense actually.

To go beyond something we need to go through it, therefore to go beyond the techniques we need to go through it, we need to learn it....
